The series began as an intuitive exploration using acrylic, ink, and chlorine — a process that gave rise to the name Ink Birds. Over time, the practice shifted to working exclusively with acrylics, allowing for a more deliberate and sustainable approach while retaining the fluidity essential to the work.

In the earliest pieces, the birds emerged without reference, shaped by imagination and instinct. Gradually, their forms became informed by the frigate birds of the Caribbean — creatures known for their expansive wings, effortless glide, and ability to remain suspended in the air for long periods of time. Rather than depicting the birds directly, their presence became a quiet point of orientation within the abstraction.

To me, the birds embody a sense of freedom and joy, yet also a quiet self-possession. They suggest independence — not as separation, but as inner certainty — and an enduring fascination with movement, presence, and the spaces between. In their flight, I see both release and return; an openness to the world and a trust in one’s own direction.
— Henriette Roka

The works in INK BIRDS are not about flight alone, but about states of being - moments of balance between motion, stillness, openness and grounding.
